Here's what caught my eye about this tutorial. Every single effect uses what's already there. Already installed. Already waiting. Like a lightsaber buried in the sand on Tatooine... you just have to reach for it.
Let's walk through the highlights.
Anamorphic Flares
Those gorgeous horizontal light streaks you see in every Christopher Nolan film? The ones that scream "this was shot on a $40,000 lens"? Jamie Fenn fakes them by stretching the HV ratio on Resolve's built-in Glow effect in the Color Page. Crank the spread. Adjust brightness. Change the color if you want.
That's it. That's the whole trick.
The gap between "looks expensive" and "is expensive" just got a lot wider. 🔥
Camera Shake
Drag the Camera Shake effect from OpenFX. Set border type to replicate so you don't get ugly black edges. Keyframe the motion scale for control.
Three steps. Your locked-off tripod shot now breathes like handheld documentary footage.
Morph Cuts
This one's sneaky. The Smooth Cut transition... designed for trimming jump cuts in interviews... becomes a morph effect when placed between two similar images. Resolve blends the pixels between them.
A tool built for one purpose, repurposed for creative magic. That's resourcefulness. That's the way.
Video Call Overlay
One drag. One drop. Your clip looks like a Zoom call. Simple. Sometimes the best effects are the ones that just... exist as presets waiting to be discovered.
Outline Effect
This one requires a little layering, but nothing complex. Duplicate your clip. Drag Edge Detect onto the copy. Increase the size. Change the composite mode to Add. Select grayscale in the effects.
BAM... stylized illustrated look. No third-party plugin. No subscription. Just knowing where to click.
Light Rays
Another OpenFX gem hiding in plain sight. Drag Light Rays onto your clip. Increase the length. Position the ray source where the actual light lives in your frame.
The key detail here... and Jamie Fenn nails it... is matching the ray position to the light source. Without that, it looks fake. With it, it looks cinematic. Details matter. Always.
Super Slow Motion
This is where things get genuinely powerful.
Right-click your clip. Select Retime Controls. Slow it down to somewhere between 5% and 15% depending on your frame rate. Then... and this is the critical move... go to the Inspector, find Retime and Scaling, and select Optical Flow with Speed Warp.
Resolve generates frames that don't exist in your original footage. It interpolates. It imagines what would be between frame A and frame B and builds it. Your 24fps clip starts behaving like it was shot at 240fps.
Is it perfect? Not always. But for the price of free? It's remarkable. ✨
Sky Replacement
The finale. And it happens entirely inside Fusion.
Start with a stationary clip that has a blue sky. Create a new Fusion clip. Add a Delta Keyer and use the color picker to select the blue. Add a Merge node. Import your replacement sky and connect it to the merge. Swap inputs with Command+T.
That's a basic compositing workflow... keying out a color and replacing it with a new background... built from just two nodes. No After Effects. No Nuke. No $600 annual subscription. Just Fusion, sitting right there inside Resolve like it's been waiting for you to notice.
Why This Matters Beyond the Timeline
I didn't share this because I think everyone needs anamorphic flares in their next video.
I shared it because of what it represents.
Every one of these effects existed inside DaVinci Resolve before Jamie Fenn hit record. Every single one. The tools were there. The capability was there. The only thing missing was someone showing you where to look.
That's true way beyond video editing.
How many capabilities are already inside you... installed, functional, waiting... that you haven't activated because nobody showed you where to click? How many "expensive-looking" results are sitting behind a setting you haven't explored yet?
